Objective of the Fund

Cancer has been a global problem; it does not only cause harm, but also is a killing disease. Cancer patients do not only suffer mentally and physically, but they also have to afford the costly treatment. In order to ease the patients’ financial burden, the OOTR KPS Medical Fund (the Fund) was founded in 2004, which is named in memory of Madam Kit-ping Siu, who died from breast cancer. The Fund provides financial support to eligible breast cancer patients for treatments.

Madam Siu was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. During her stay in the hospital, she witnessed the breast cancer patient next bed giving up using new drugs because of the high cost, and she passed away after two months. This sad incident shocked Madam Siu. Learning the presence of OOTR from her doctor Prof. Louis Chow, Madam Siu and her husband Mr. Anthony Choy came up with an idea of helping the low-income cancer patients, so that they can use the expensive new drugs as well.

Madam Siu passed away in 2004, and Mr. Choy followed her will – donating all the funeral grieving money to OOTR. The KPS Medical Fund was established in the same year, and was named after Madam Kit-ping Siu. The first donation of the Fund was from Mr. Choy.
